How should I use this medication?

The usual dose to relieve asthma symptoms for adults and children over 4 years of age is 2 inhalations (also called "puffs") repeated every 4 to 6 hours as needed. More frequent dosing or taking more puffs is not recommended. For preventing exercise-induced asthma, the usual dose is 2 puffs 15 to 30 minutes before exercise. Your dosage will usually be determined by your doctor.

To ensure you are taking the correct dose of medication, make sure you are instructed by the doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional on how to use the inhaler properly. The use of an aerosol inhaler by children depends on the ability of the individual child to learn the proper use of the device. During inhalation, children should be assisted or supervised by an adult who knows how to use the device properly.

Always carry your albuterol aerosol inhaler with you to use immediately if you have an asthma attack. It is very important not to exceed the recommended dose. If you still have difficulty breathing, call your doctor at once.

It is important that this medication be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from heat and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Albuterol aerosol should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to albuterol or to any of the ingredients of the medication.
